Coffee and Birthdays…

What can be better?

Both are crazy awesome (as long as you aren’t counting cups or candles), and even better when shared with others.

Today is Tonya’s birthday, and she’ll be celebrating with the rest of our crafty crew. Not sure if candles will be involved, but coffee most certainly will, and a whole lot of laughs.  Sadly, Katie and I will be celebrating from afar, but nonetheless wishing we were there to ring in what I hope will be another successful, creative year for Tonya!

2015 saw the launch of her boutique-style craft store, The Heart Desires, which is bringing in new product daily, some of which I am featuring today on Tonya’s birthday card.

So nearly every item on this card can be found in The Heart Desires shop–and probably my favorite addition to my supplies is the Richard Garay sweater embossing folder. His product is new to me–that is what is great about the style of Tonya’s store, she features items I haven’t come across before, or that may not be the most promoted brand (though you can find those too, like Concord &9th’s newest releases and Neat and Tangled that work so well together).

The coffee cup has been stamped 3x and heat embossed from Neat and Tangled’s Perfect Blend set, then fussy cut and adhered to the base to create the lid and wrap.  The lid was covered with Versamark clear embossing ink and clear embossing powder to give a glossy plastic appearance to the lid.

I love Concord and 9th’s large stamps, like this one from the Crazy Awesome set, stamped on vellum and heat embossed, but with a few rearrangements, the dried embossing chipped off in a few places!  I used WOW orange embossing powder, and think the lines may have been too thin, or the pigment ink I used didn’t adhere to the vellum well thus causing the embossed sections to chip off.  It *was* perfect!!  Grrr…Anyone ever have this issue? I never have… Delicata gold heat embossed with Ranger Super Fine gold powder was used for sentiment.

Maggie Holmes Bloom paper has been added with twine to the edge for interest; I have also featured Concord and 9th’s new leaf die cut from gold foam.  Sentiment is from Perfect Blend set as well and stamped with Hero Arts Unicorn White. Some fun lemon-cream and gold dot washi finishes the inside.

Not only is it Tonya’s special day, but also the first couple days of our Fall Coffee Lovers Hop! Can’t believe I made it to both parties on time!!  It’s back to school for me, and I went from 0 to 60 first thing Monday morning– so every day has been a 9-9 (or later) work day!  Coffee, anyone?

And with that, I am heading to bed, or I will be one bleary-eyed teacher in the too-soon morning!

Hop along with us won’t you? And make sure to send some birthday wishes Tonya’s way, and maybe some orders!!

Happy birthday friend– coffee on me, soon!

Keep Palm. Carry On.

After a very un-calm week, I was keeping so calm at the end of each day that I never got around to this post.  I was definately on island time in the creation, photographing, editing and posting of these cards.  All in all, about 2 1/2 weeks now.  Our mini heat wave here in Seattle is partly to blame– a 90 degree studio and exhaustion from both the heat and teaching didn’t really create the prime conditions.

I took to a kayak last night because I was too tired to trek to the outdoor pool and swim laps, but needed the relief of water.  It was a glorious night and there’s nothing better than being on, in or around the water at sunset.  Fires in the Olympic National Park are creating paradoxically stunning sunsets–neon pink and purple striations.  But I am not ready for their earlier and earlier arrival. And today, it’s windy, grey, and COLD– something I am also not relishing.

So let’s pretend that we are in the tropics, shall we?

photostudio_1472240887264_wm.jpg

I started with the ombre palm background using the set Say Aloha by Kaisercraft available at The Heart Desires store, stamping in three different green pigment inks.

I stamped the flamingo from the same set, wet embossed with some sparkle powder, and fussy cut, then set to layering.  The hibiscus is from CottageCutz and is cut from hand-colored alcohol-inked glossy paper.  Note the ombre effect on the flower/leaves.  Love that Little B pineapple!

I cut my sentiment banner and stamped with Delicata Gold and heat embossed.  The gold palm is a new die from Savvy Stamps.

Love the sheen of the glossy paper and embossed inks.

Everything was layered on 110# Wood embossed paper and the inside finished with one of my most favorite washis. The banner needed more of a focal point so the triangle enamel piece pulled it together and echoes the washi.  It also is the same color as my glossy paper.

Card 2

The next card is a variation on the theme.

This time I used more of the ferns and fronds from Say Aloha and ones from Hero Arts Stamp Your Own Plant both available at The Heart Desires.  Again, I chose a selection of green pigment inks.  Tonya has some of the lovely Hero Arts Hybrid inks in a variety of greens–Moss, Green Apple, Pine–that would work well.

The hibiscus and palm dies make an appearance again– this time in coral card stock and wood paper respectively.

A few Savvy and Julie Ebersole flowers were cut from stock and glossy alcohol papers and layered in.  Everything was placed upon the Concord and 9th’s Tree Ring, stamped in Hero Arts Unicorn White and heat embossed on vellum. The wood paper panel is from the Bloom set. Ink, stamps, and paper are all waiting for you at The Heart Desires as well!

The inside is finished with ombre-metallic washi.  You can see how I layered my gold sentiment die with some glitter foam.

Now if these colors and designs are reminding you of something, it should be our current challenge!

You have 5 more days to play along, so I hope you have found some inspiration here today!

Keep palm and have a creative weekend everyone!

THD Challenge #3

You know what never gets old? Gold.

You know what else doesn’t get old? Playing along with The Heart Desires Challenge!

I mean how could it?  We’re only 3 months into it and waiting for you to participate!!

So we have a bit of gold, woodgrain, and juicy succulents to get you inspired.  Trendy succulents haven’t lost their appeal, either– especially in my house.  I have the offspring of a 15 year old plant, fondly referred to as “hair plant”, purchased a few months after my move to Seattle (who sadly succumbed to root rot and fungal disease despite massive measures a few years after our 2012 move to the beach). I was often mad at my cat Leo, who loved to sit in the plant, chew on it and basically be naughty with it from the time he was a kitten to it’s untimely demise.  But the good news is that because of his naughtiness, that hair plant lives!!  He broke off a large arm of it right before it got sick, which I rooted and re-potted, thus it never got the fungal disease!  A lucky break (no pun intended)!

Here’s a picture:

And here’s our inspiration photo for this month’s challenge!

THD3
I worked in all three elements–metallic, woodgrain and plants!

I used the We R Memory Keepers Next Level Bouquet floral embossing folder— these folders are so amazing.  The depth and texture and possibilities are phenomenal.  I am also featuring the Tear Drops and Clear Dots which are such a cool embellishment.  Both are available in the Heart Desires Store! The embossed layer has been splattered with Coral Color Shine by Heidi Swapp, which is also slightly metallic in the light.

Gold and woodgrain figure prominently!  Hey Tonya, recognize the wood tags?  They were gifted in my huge box of goodies!  Love these tags so much!

I customed colored glossy cardstock with alcohol inks to get my perfect pinks and ombre shading. It is my favorite way to use the inks.  The flowers and woodgrain leaf are from Wild Garden by Julie Ebersole.  If you follow my work, then you know I can’t get enough of this set!

The rest of the papers are digital prints from The Lilypad– a wonderful collection from Forever Joy.  The inside is finished with some ombre metallic washi!

That’s it for me– until tomorrow when I will have some more inspiration for you based on our challenge photo and mixing it up with Concord & 9th!

Until then, check out the rest of the team and play along with us this month.  You have until Wednesday 8.31!

THD July Challenge: Tropical

Hey everyone! Welcome to our second month-long challenge at The Heart Desires! All of our June participants knocked the first challenge out of the park, or in keeping with the nautical theme, beyond the sea!!

This month we bring you an equally beautiful inspiration graphic and a sketch!  Taking it tropical this time around!

THD2

Here’s my interpretation of the graphic and, very loosely, the sketch!  I took my cue from an earlier card I made for a student, which you can see here. I have worked in every color!!

photostudio_1467784117885_wm.jpg

Using Hero Arts Ombre Pink ink, I repeat stamped sentiments from Concord & 9th’s Wonderful Women set on Ranger watercolor paper, all of which are available at The Heart Desires!

photostudio_1467784846200_wm.jpg

It’s a bit difficult to see, but this close-up shows the nature of the ombre ink and how well it works with the watercolor paper.  Atop the vellum frame cut from MFT’s diagonal stitch die, I added PTI’s slide, cut multiple times from #110 paper for thickness, topping with those fabulous flamingos from The Lilypad, digitally printed paper.

Neat and Tangled’s sentiment, one of my favorites, is cut from gold foam (love that stuff!!). The white and gold paper echoes the gold of the die and is also from The Lilypad, digitally printed.

photostudio_1467784320686_wm.jpg

In this photo, you can see the lovely layers, and that base paper–which was the most difficult layer to finally figure out–is from Basic Grey’s Urban Luxe, which you can no longer find! I should have bought out the collection when I had the chance!  Love how the gold splotches and blues work with the other papers, and particularly the flowers.

photostudio_1467784543591_wm.jpg

What better than the versatile floral die set from Ellen Hutson, Wild Garden?  The flowers work for so many different occasions! They are cut from The Lilypad digital paper, lime and white linen cardstock.

And those gorgeous regatta blue buttons embellish!

I have so many graduation cards to finish– this one is headed to my college-bound student.

Alright, now it’s your turn to play along with us!  You have until Wednesday, July 27!

Super Lucky Birthday

image

There’s a lot to celebrate this weekend: making it home alive from vacation, the Fourth of July, oh and Ms. Toni’s BIRTHDAY!

So looooong before I ever met Toni, I discovered her website, Frankie Helps Craft, likely back in 2013 or early 2014 (I would have to look back at my comments). I really liked her work, and her love of cats (Frankie is her boy who looks much like my Atticus), and the fact she was living nearby.  It would be another year or so until she joined our PNW crafting group, and I know we are all really happy she did!  In addition to the aforementioned qualities, once I got to know Toni, there was even more to like–mutual love of X-Files, her sassiness and humor! She has brought some crazy crafting stations to our gatherings and taught us some mad techniques!  And now, she is Tonya’s right hand woman, working hard to keep The Heart Desires blog rolling and all of us in line!  She is a great leader for the team, and so I am sending a big thank you and even bigger birthday wishes to Toni today!

image

Super lucky–the world and us, Toni!! She really likes nautical and we just wrapped up our nautical month over at The Heart Desires, so I integrated that into the card with non-traditional colors inspired as well by our first challenge!

Tonya has the awesome Carta Bella World embossing folder for sale, and I received it with about 50 million other goodies she sent me last month!  I was anticipating a bubble mailer; I received a box that was a workout for my pathetic arms! It will take me about 50 million years to discover all that is in that box! Definitely the gift that will keep on giving– and that is why crafty friends are the best!

I love how the embossing folder looks with the Tim Holtz watercolor paper (also available from THD).  I thought about watercoloring it, but really just love it clean, especially with the bold black sentiment from Julie Ebersole’s Up the Happy Stamp set.

I adorned the top with some bits and bobs; flair I made from a digital print and epoxy sticker; Avery Elle flag cut from digital paper; an old Studio Calico vellum flag; and die cut anchor from MFT.  Not complete without a sequin strand!

That’s it for me. I am heading to bed with visions of the sea floating in my mind; sand still stuck between my toes; and hopes that Toni has a fabulous day!

You are off to Amy’s site to continue the hop; if you get lost, check in with our host, Lenae of Sugar Gems!

Just be You Birthday Hop!

Hello everyone from the Oregon Coast! Popping in to wish Katie Brooks of KB Stamps a happy birthday!

image

All you have to do is look at a picture of smiling Katie to know what kind of person she is and I love it when we craft together, which hasn’t happened nearly enough lately! Her cards are sweet, colorful, and often full of cheer and fun critters, and she is a master!

Taking my cue from Katie, and our first ever challenge over at The Heart Desires, I made this card for her! (BTW You have one more day to play along with us!!)

We’re Getting Nautical!

Hey everyone, it’s been slow sailing for me the past 3 weeks after being very ill with a flu that left me bed-bound for nearly a week and affected my eyes so I could not read or look at screens for many days; my eyes and brain are still giving me trouble, so I am following up on that, but am happy to say that my energy and joie de vivre have returned!

Just in time for all the activities this month over at The Heart Desires and the upcoming Coffee Lovers Hop starting next week, June 17th.  Head over the The Heart Desires to see more of my card featuring Carta Bella papers and embellishments.

Shop The Heart Desires for the papers and the adorable slide frame from Crate Paper.

My card also features MFT rectangle diagonal stitch die, Savvy Stamps banner die, Studio Calico Wheel die, and an old Kelly Purkey sentiment stamped in Delicata gold on vellum.

We also have a challenge going on until June 30th, with gorg

eous graphics and options for play.  I am happy to say we have some excellent entries already and still have nearly 3 weeks to go!  So please play along and spread the word!
